Edmonton hockey fans will get an opportunity to check out Professional Women’s Hockey League (PWHL) action this winter, as part of the PWHL’s Takeover Tour.
The Toronto Sceptres and Ottawa Charge will hit Rogers Place on Feb. 16, 2025, one of a string of nine neutral-ice regular season games this season.
Amy Scheer, the league’s senior vice president of business operations, said there’s been a lot of enthusiasm from other cities to host these games.
“Bringing PWHL games to fans across both countries is a natural next step as we continue building our audience,” Scheer said in a Wednesday release.
“The PWHL Takeover Tour lets us showcase our game and exceptional athletes across a wider North American footprint—an exciting moment for our players and an important move for our business as we consider expansion.”
While the game is neutral ice for the two teams, there are a couple of players who will potentially have some hometown support in the crowd.
Ottawa Charge rookies Danielle Serdachny and Stephanie Markowski both grew up in Edmonton. Meanwhile, Toronto Sceptres star player Sarah Nurse is well known to Edmonton crowds, both as a Team Canada standout and as cousin of Oilers blueliner Darnell Nurse.
Stu Ballantyne, president and COO of Rogers Place and Ice District, said the prospect of hosting the women’s league in Edmonton is exciting.
“This is the perfect opportunity to bring the world’s best women’s hockey players to one of the world’s best arenas, to play in front of the world’s best hockey fans,” Ballantyne said.
For his part, Alberta Tourism Minister Joseph Schow said: “Bringing the PWHL to Edmonton will not only have fans flocking to see the best women’s hockey players in the world compete in our beautiful capital city, it’ll inspire the next generation of Alberta athletes to aim high and achieve greatness.”
As part of this special tour, the Toronto Sceptres and Ottawa Charge will face off on Sunday, Feb.16, with the game beginning at 2:00 p.m. at Rogers Place in Edmonton.
Tickets will be available starting with a presale on Thursday at 8:00 a.m. followed by the general on-sale on Friday at 11:00 a.m. Tickets can be purchased at thepwhl.com/tickets.
The tour will feature all six PWHL teams and will hit Seattle, Vancouver, Denver, Quebec City, Buffalo, Raleigh and Detroit.
