A Bristol restaurant has been listed as serving up one of the 50 best roast dinners in Britain. BANK in Totterdown has been named among The Good Food Guide‘s list of the top Sunday roasts in the country.

The Guide’s search for the best roast “underlines the importance of championing those restaurants, pubs and cafes that are the backbone of the British dining scene”. Synonymous with tradition and family gatherings, The Guide says, and offered everywhere from simple neighbourhood cafes to grand hotel dining rooms, the thousands of nominations received show just how much a Sunday roast is loved across the country – some 75 per cent of Good Food Guide readers said a roast is Britain’s most famous dish.

In the category of best roast dinners in the South West of England, Bristol’s BANK, on Wells Road, was the only establishment in the city listed – others in the region are situated in Cornwall, Devon, and Wiltshire.

It’s not the first time Bank has been named among Britain’s best. Following its relaunch in 2023, it was featured in The Good Food Guide’s prestigious list of Britain’s Best Local Restaurants – one of five Bristol venues featured in the list.

The restaurant now serves up a wood fired menu, designed for sharing, which is described by the team as making the most of produce from the South West, reflecting the seasons and taking inspiration from fire cooking traditions across the globe. You can even get a wood fired roast dinner on Sundays and, what’s more, “laptops and little ones are very welcome”.

Other options on the menu from head chef and co-owner Jack Briggs-Horan, include light lunches, leisurely feasts and special events that sell out super quickly.

With a Google rating of 4.7 stars out of five (with some 300 reviews at time of writing), locals and foodies from miles around can’t seem to get enough of the place either. One reviewer, who visited some three months ago, wrote: “BANK is our go-to Sunday roast restaurant. After embarking on the quest to find the best Sunday roast in Bristol, we stumbled across BANK and haven’t looked back since.

“They do their dishes incredibly well, making sure everything is cooked to perfection whilst also adding twists and flairs that make it more exciting for a foodie than the general Sunday roast fare. In particular, their vegetables (which normally can be a bit sad in a Sunday roast) are great company to the main hero of the meal.

“The sharing roasts are an absolute treat, and my favourite roast to date was a roast lamb they did a while ago which also came with, what I can only describe as, a breaded and fried rolled stick of lamb deliciousness. The team at BANK are always super friendly and the restaurant has a spacious and easy going vibe.

“Would recommend booking ahead as well as booking for towards start of service as it tends to guarantee perfect roast potatoes. Their dinner menu is great too, but the Sunday roast is what keeps us going back.”
