Filming for a Doctor Who spin-off series continued in Bristol yesterday within a private property. The new TV series, The War Between the Land and the Sea, will be a five-part series focussing on the return of the Sea Devils.
The series for BBC One is expected to be released in 2025 and is written by Russell T Davies and Pete McTighe with filming by Bad Wolf. The series will form part of the wider Whoniverse, a shared universe revolving around the iconic series.
Filming took place on Canynge Road, in Clifton, yesterday (Monday, November 18) inside a property. Canynge Road was closed from Percival Road to the junction with Cecil Road and Clifton Down. It is unclear who took part in the filming throughout the evening.
It follows previous filming which took place at the Harbourside in October which saw the Lloyd’s Amphitheatre transformed. Various filming rigs and vehicles were on set over the course of a few days.
Russell Tovey was spotted at the Harbourside as he and Gugu Mbatha-Raw lead the cast (whilst playing different characters from their previous appearances in the franchise). Jemma Redgrave, Alexander Devrient, Ruth Madeley and Colin McFarlane all reprise their characters from previous series and spin-offs.
The Sea Devils, the main antagonists in the upcoming series, first faced off against the Third Doctor (played by Jon Pertwee) in 1972’s The Sea Devils. They were last seen in 2022’s Legend of the Sea Devils where the Thirteenth Doctor (Jodie Whittaker) faced off against the long-running antagonist.
The War Between the Land and the Sea is the first spin-off series of the Whoniverse, following three previous episodic spin-offs. It explores what happens when the iconic Doctor isn’t around. It will also be available to watch on Disney+.
