Energy customers across the UK could save more than £100 on their heating bills by simply dropping their thermostat a negligible amount.
Information from Citizens Advice states that turning down thermostat by just 1C can save around 10 per cent on energy bills. Similarly, a study from the University College of London, which examined thermostat readings from 13,000 homes across the country, found that keeping temperatures between 22C and 18C could save the average home roughly £130.
It further detailed that the average household used around £1.10 less in gas for every square meter that covered their household alongside 40p less electricity when dropping thermostat temps by 1C. However, how much you save will be factored by things such as the size of your home, how cold it is outside, and how long the heating is switched on for.
How warm should my home be in winter?
In order to stay warm and healthy, the NHS recommends that homes are kept to at least 18C. It also advises that Brits keep their windows close don winter night as breathing in cold air could pose an increased risk to health as well as increase the risk of chest infections.
It also advises that people wear a lot of thin layers at home with clothes made from cotton, wool, or fleecy fibres which are effecting at maintaining body heat. It also notes that it’s a good idea to wear good-fitting slippers and shoes with a grip to avoid slipping while staying warm.
Citizens Advice also advses that those with a health condition that could suffer more from cold conditions shouldn’t se their thermostat any lower than 21C. Further advice from Citizens Advice on how to effectively heat your home can be found here.
