Police say a Calgary physician sexually assaulted several patients in a Brentwood-area medical clinic.

It’s alleged the family practitioner assaulted the patients at the clinic at 810 3630 Brentwood Rd. N.W. between 2016 and 2020.

“Each victim reported they were sexually assaulted in an examination room when the doctor performed non-consensual sexual acts during their medical examinations,” city police said in a written statement.

Last year, said police, four alleged victims separately made the accusations to police.

After what police are calling a lengthy investigation, officers charged Phu Truong Vu, 46, with four counts of sexual assault.

Earlier this year, the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta (CPSA) cancelled Vu’s permit after the body found him guilty of inappropriate and unsolicited behaviour involving two female patients during sensitive examinations.

“The second incident occurred after the 2019 implementation of An Act to Protect Patients, legislation which changed the definitions of sexual abuse and misconduct for regulated health professionals, and introduced mandatory sanctions,” the college stated in a July 16, 2024, press release.

“In this circumstance, Dr. Vu’s actions were found to meet the definition of sexual abuse under the Health Professions Act.”

His permit to practise was suspended in August 2022 but after further deliberations, the college’s tribunal chose to cancel his permit and registration while levying a $10,000 lump sum penalty.

Vu, they said, appealed the decision while the CPSA’s complaints director has appealed the tribunal’s decision, arguing the monetary costs were insufficient.

Vu’s next court appearance is scheduled for Dec. 3.
