A Co Down animal charity has shared a positive update on an abandoned puppy which was set to be be put down due to its extreme injuries.

Seven-month-old Chance was brought to the Barn Animal Rescue Newtownards “covered in mange” two weeks ago, with the centre warning she faced “a lot of veterinary attention for the next few weeks” to recover.

At the time the centre hit out and said they had “never seen a pup in such a terrible or neglected state come into our rescue”.

The initial post drew a large response across Northern Ireland with thousands liking and sharing it.

Last week, Barn Animal Rescue said the dog was recovering well in their care with her feeding tube and hydration drip removed to make sure she is able to eat and drink herself.

In a new update posted this evening, the charity said Chance is now eating food, and has tasted chicken “for the first time.”

“(Chance) is starting to respond to treatment and the care she is getting at our vets. She is enjoying taking her medication hidden in lovely fresh chicken, which I’m fairly sure she has never tasted before,” they posted on Facebook.

“We are thankful that she is taking solid food now, so the feeding tube is not required. We will bring you another update towards the weekend, but we are grateful for the care she is getting and all the messages of hope and love received.

“You can still help with Chances care by donating to our vets via their website or directly to the shelter using our Facebook link.

“Our phone line is still down even after two weeks, and we can only apologise to anyone who has been trying to make contact. We are assured it will be active on Wed for anyone looking to get in touch.

“Thank you to everyone who has donated to Chance and her care.”
