The 1,000 Candles Commemorative vigil — held at the Consulate General of Ukraine on Lakeshore Blvd. — was held the day after Russia pummelled Ukrainian targets with 120 rockets and 80 drones, the largest such attack to date.
“This vigil marks the poignant milestone of 1,000 days since the beginning of the all-out war with Russia,” the Ukrainian Canadian Congress said. “A time to reflect, stand together, and remember the resilience and sacrifice of all those who continue to defend Ukraine’s freedom.”
Marc Shwec, chairman of Stand With Ukraine Committee, said 1,000 candles were lit at the vigil to mark each day of the war.
“We have to let the people of Ukraine know we have not forgotten them. We need to let our (Canadian) government know they need our support, or they will fail. This is a nice way for us to bring attention to the cause,” Shwec said.

He said his organization is lobbying for Ukraine to have the ability to use long-range missiles.
“We need to allow them to shoot across the border and keep the Russians out. The West has to stop drip-feeding arms to Ukraine so they can push the Russians back,” Shwec said.
“Ukraine is willing to fight the war, but we have to help them. This is an extended fight for European democracy.”
