A doctor has explained there are some little-known symptoms and side effects of diabetes that men and women will only see in the bedroom. Dr Michael Krychman has spoken on World Diabetes Day on November 14 to raise awareness of diabetes and how it can impact your sex life.

According to a UCSF study, women with diabetes experience lower rates of sexual satisfaction and diabetic women undergoing insulin treatment are at a higher risk for problems. Dr. Michael Krychman, an obstetrics and gynaecology expert, said there are a number of signs of diabetes you will spot in bed.

Dryness: Blood sugar fluctuations and hormonal changes impact natural lubrication. High blood sugar can also lead to dehydration, which translates to dryness, making sex uncomfortable or painful.

Dr Krychman said: “Vaginal dryness is not an uncommon feature with women with diabetes and fluctuations of poorly controlled sugar. Dryness can lead to pain during intercourse and decreased overall pleasure and satisfaction.”

Decreased blood flow: Diabetes can affect circulation, which leads to less blood flow in the genital area.

Dr Krychman said: “We see a noted decline in blood flow with vascular changes associated with diabetes.”

Neuropathy: Diabetes can cause nerve damage and numbness, reducing sensitivity during sex.

Dr Krychman said: “Diabetes and nerve damage can cause changes in overall sensual sensation with decreased pleasure and satisfaction.

Dr Krychman, medical consultant for lubricant brand überlube recommends using lubrication which combats dryness and reduces friction to ensure that sex with diabetes is enjoyable. Überlube’s Vitamin E formula means it can be used as a daily moisturiser.
