Customers walking into a Toyota dealership looking for a RAV4 will be spoilt for choice in 2025, with a total of 16 different variants on tap — all variation on a theme, of course. The range spans from an entry-level LE with all-wheel-drive; through to a smattering of hybrids; and on to a top-rung XSE with the popular plug-in hybrid powertrain.

Actually, speaking of the latter, we will take this opportunity to remind all hands that Toyota is dropping the “Prime” moniker from machines equipped with that propulsion in favour of “PHEV” badging. The official reason is one of marketing simplicity, with suits alleging customers will be less confused after this change. We prefer to think Jeff Bezos from Amazon paid a visit to Toyota HQ in Japan and told them not to use the “Prime” name any more whilst wielding some sort of death ray from outer space. Anyway—

If you’re looking for arcane pub-quiz trivia, there will be five trims of the gasser; eight of the hybrid; and three of the PHEV. Prices start at $33,555 for the base LE, and rise to $61,945 for a fully loaded plug-in hybrid. Amid this is a Woodland trim, shown here in green with 18-inch bronze TRD Off-Road wheels and a TRD-tuned suspension, offered only as a hybrid for $42,524. Prices are up across the board, but only nominally and largely in line with inflation.

The pure gasoline-powered trims pack a 2.5L four-cylinder engine good for 203 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque, all routed through an eight-speed automatic transmission. Meanwhile, the hybrid utilizes a gasser of the same description in concert with motor-generators and efficient storage batteries to make 219 ponies and 221 lb-ft of twist. A CVT is on duty here.

Finally, the PHEV also uses a 2.5L four-cylinder engine plus high-torque electric motors, but they work together to generate 302 horsepower. In the right conditions, that rig can travel about 65 clicks and at speeds up to 135 km/h without burning a drop of gasoline. This author’s own testing suggests a driving range of well over 900 kilometres on a full battery and full tank of fuel, meaning you’ll need to stop for fluids before the car does.

The 2025 Toyota RAV4, RAV4 Hybrid, and RAV4 PHEV are now on sale at dealerships across the country.
