The sandwich chain, which has nearly 1,150 locations across the province including 187 in Toronto, was forced to shut down its store at 1385 Lawrence Ave. W. – just east of Keele St. – after health inspectors issued a summons and health hazard order.

The closure notice issued was due to the crucial infraction “Food premise maintained in manner permitting health hazard (sewage),” Toronto Public Health spokesperson and associate director of food safety Brian Thompson told the Toronto Sun in a statement.

He noted an inspector “observed a sewage backup from a floor drain, which creates conditions for a health hazard,” resulting in the immediate closure.

“The food premises operator was directed to repair the plumbing system and to clean and sanitize all floors and food contact equipment,” Thompson continued. “These infractions will be reinspected by TPH when the operator indicates that they have mitigated the health hazard that resulted in the closure of the food premises.”

The location also received two other violations – failing to ensure equipment surfaces were cleaned as necessary, considered a “significant” violation, while the floors in the restaurant’s food-handling room were not maintained and clean, a “minor” infraction.

The restaurant has since reopened after correcting all the infractions.
