A vegetarian Indian restaurant is finding its feet after opening on Stapleton Road six weeks ago. Pappu Dosa, which already has a branch in Patchway, has now taken on the building which is currently Space 238 on Stapleton Road.
They are now open Tuesday to Sunday from 12pm-10pm for lunch and dinner, with a capacity for over 80 guests. The restaurant owners, Tim Darling and Maya Evans, were finding the Patchway branch was not big enough to meet their demand so they decided to open an additional restaurant in Easton.
As the name suggests, the pure vegetarian restaurant specialises in dosas, a popular pancake dish from South India. Head chef and co-director Mr Darling trained in London with chefs from South India and subsequently lived in Chennai with a local family where he perfected his knowledge of the local cuisine.
The restaurant offers 15 different dosas which are priced between £5.99 and £8.99. These include a spicy paneer dosa, a kid’s dosa and their speciality, the Mysore Masala Dosa – a huge pancake filled with spicy potato with tomato, coriander and coconut chutney and sambar.
There are also plenty of snacks for sale for as little as £3.50 and the restaurant also has a range of Indo-Chinese dishes, north Indian dishes and lunchtime deals. A range of drinks including chai and lassis are also on sale but if people wish to drink alcohol with their evening meal they can bring their own.
Mr Darling said: “I used to live in Wimbledon and a friend of a friend had a South Indian restaurant where I went and worked and learned all these recipes from a South Indian chef. Then I moved to South India where I stayed with a family and did a lot of research and development over there as well.
“Since I started this business during the pandemic I’ve developed the same recipes over the past three and a half years.”
