GO AHEAD, STRIKE
Re “Canadian Union of Postal Workers issues 72-hour strike notice to Canada Post” (The Canadian Press, Nov. 12): If I worked for an employer who paid me a decent salary with included benefits, generous vacation time and an indexed pension, I’d be careful in my demands for more, particularly if my employer was losing hundreds of millions of dollars annually. Go ahead and strike if that’s what you think is your best strategy but please be sure to settle in time to deliver my $200 gift cheque from Premier Doug Ford.

CANADIAN VALUES
Now that Donald Trump is back in office, migrant cross-border entry into the U.S. has just become a lot more difficult. Does this mean that Canada will be besieged by asylum seekers? I doubt it but there’s no doubt there is a global migration which will only be exacerbated by climate change. The COVID event and this mass migration has impacted the western world, leading to many of these nations experiencing the same problems, eg. whether in the U.K., Europe or North America, homelessness is on the rise as is discontent and protest. The plight of many of these migrant people is certainly tragic as they weather all kinds of hazards, only to be met with resentment and suspicion in the Land of Milk and Honey. Yes there is a criminal element, either in the human smuggling and trafficking or with the bad apples who travel with them. As with the animal kingdom, outsiders are seldom welcome until they prove themselves and integrate into the societal mainstream. However, short-sighted politicians like Trudeau have offered a carte blanche to all kinds of “refugees” without considering the long-term effect on Canada. It’s not racist to expect newcomers to adopt Canadian values, something that Immigration Canada has been amiss in its new Canadian orientation.
