• A Florida hot-rod truck shop just built what may be the world’s first Tesla Cybertruck dually
  • Those gigantic tires you’re looking at are a set of 35-inch meats on 26-inch wheels
  • The Tesla dually made its debut at SEMA 2024 because of course it did

If there’s one thing to be said about the annual SEMA Show in Las Vegas, it’s that one is likely to see numerous ‘world first’ builds at the event. Whether or not the builds should have been constructed is often up for debate. After all, it was Ian Malcolm in the original Jurassic Park who mused “Your scientists were so preoccupied with whether or not they could, they didn’t stop to think if they should.” The same can be said for much of what’s on display at SEMA.

Falling within that purview is this thing, a dually Tesla Cybertruck, hewn in just a few days by a hot rod shop in Florida. Builders at Red’s Miami were posting updates about this effort to their Instagram account before the show, and apparently didn’t start the customization much more than a week before SEMA.

Giant 26-inch wheels were wrapped in 35-inch off-road tires, a decision which makes up in bragging rights what its likely scuppered in all-electric driving range. A post to the builder’s Instagram account says they originally considered 28-inch wheels but backed off that decision. Only in the twisted world of SEMA are 26-inch rims considered the practical choice.

Details are scarce about specifics of the build, but we did learn the Cybertruck’s rear-axle steering apparently retains function — though we wonder about the immense strain it is surely under, given the extra weight and rolling resistance. The custom fender flares hew to the pickup’s outrageous square bodywork and mimic the ‘stainless’ steel used for its construction.

Another IG account, @cyber_dos_wheels, created this month, says it was installing new wheels on a Cybertruck when a colleague walked past with a set of dually wheels for another project. Like all good schemes, the idea took off from there.

Alert readers know the charging port on a Tesla Cybertruck is hidden in the driver-side fender flare, throwing a potential wrench into the works. However, the build team apparently managed to find a way to alter the charging port on the truck so its stock location in the fender flare could be retained — albeit several inches further towards the road’s centre line.

This truck-loving author thinks the next logical step for Red’s Miami is to turn their creation into a Phantom Dually, a type of truck whose dual rear wheels are replaced with a single ultra-wide tire on each side of the axle. That’d be another world-first feather in yer cap, guys.
