Former Premier League star John Fashanu has thrown his support behind having a female presenter for Match of the Day after Gary Lineker revealed that he has quit the show.

On Tuesday, the BBC confirmed that Lineker had signed an 18-month extension – after his previous deal was due to expire at the end of this year.

Names of his potential replacement have been floating around, and despite nothing being confirmed female presenters Gabby Logan and Alex Scott have appeared near the top of the list.

Fashanu, the ex-footballer, speaking on GB News emphasised that football is undergoing substantial changes regarding female participation in the sport.

“Football is changing. We must understand that there are a lot of changes, and they’re coming. They’re here now,” Fashanu said.

“Even to look at my mother, I wouldn’t take her to the stadium because, women don’t like football, mummy, so please sit down,” he revealed.

However, he firmly declared that such outdated attitudes belong in the past.

“But that’s over, those things have gone now. Yes, a woman can be a referee, a woman can be a player. We shouldn’t have this no women all the time.

“It’s hard for us men to accept that women, some women, can be better than men.

“We’re now in a period where, of course, we can have a lady as a referee, as a lineswoman. There are some very good female footballers.”

“I’ve had 16 years in the Premier League, and I think that I’m qualified to be able to say what I think,” he noted.

“Of course we want women. They’re part of the game. They’re part of the football game,” Fashanu declared.
