Once there’s kickoff in the 111th Grey Cup on Sunday, it won’t be hard to find Maple Leafs coach Craig Berube.

He’ll probably be parked on his couch in front of his TV, ready to watch the Argonauts and Winnipeg Blue Bombers battle for Canadian Football League supremacy.

Berube ended his media scrum at Leafs practice on Monday with a “Go Argos!” and on Tuesday after the morning skate, he was asked whether he is an Argos fan.

“I am now,” Berube said, a joking nod to MLSE’s ownership of the Double Blue. “Growing up in Canada, I watched CFL football as a young kid and would go out and screw around outside with the football.

“As you grow older, you start watching the NFL, but I’ve still got some very good interest in (the CFL), and wish them all the best.”

Berube’s home town of Calahoo, Alta., is northwest of Edmonton, but the Eskimos (now the Elks) were not the team that captured his imagination the most when he was a kid.

“I was actually a Blue Bombers fan,” Berube said. “I don’t know why. I liked the Eskimos too, living there when they had Warren Moon. They were a very good team.”

At BC Place in Vancouver, the Argos and Bombers will meet in the Grey Cup for the eighth time. Toronto has won all seven championship meetings between the teams, most recently in 2022 with a 24-23 victory in Regina.

With Argos star quarterback Chad Kelly on the sideline after he broke his right ankle during Toronto’s 30-28 win against the Montreal Alouettes in the Eastern final on Saturday afternoon, the Bombers are heavy favourites to win this weekend.
