Marks & Spencer, House of Fraser and Homebase are among the businesses shutting locations down this month as store closures continue throughout the UK.

British high streets continue to face significant challenges, with new data revealing shops are closing at an alarming rate of 38 per day.

A recent report by PwC shows that 6,945 shops closed their doors in the first half of this year. This marks a slight increase from the same period last year, which saw 36 daily closures.

The decline in physical retail presence directly reflects changing consumer behaviour, with PwC noting that store closures “almost exactly mirror the decline of in-store shopping and the corresponding rise of online retail sales”.

The closure is part of a decade-long restructuring plan that will see many traditional department stores replaced with M&S Foodhalls.

Graham Bennett, M&S regional manager, explained the decision was driven by evolving consumer preferences.

“Individual conversations are continuing with our colleagues, and wherever possible, we will be offering them alternative roles with M&S,” he said.

House of Fraser is set to close another iconic store, with its Bluewater Shopping Centre location in Kent shutting on November 27.

The department store has been a prominent fixture at the shopping centre for 25 years, operating across two floors.

This closure marks another chapter in the ongoing decline of the historic department store chain.

The Kent location has been serving customers from its large unit since the shopping centre opened.

Shoppers have just over two weeks remaining to visit the store before its permanent closure.

DIY retailer Homebase has already closed two locations this month, with its stores at Marsh Mills Retail Park in Plymouth and Southam Road in Banbury ceasing operations.

Outdoor retailer Millets has launched clearance sales at six locations, offering 30 per cent off all stock ahead of planned closures.

Four of these Millets stores – in Lowestoft, York, Douglas and Grimsby – will be rebranded as GO Outdoors, while the Burgess Hill branch will close permanently.

Evans Cycles is also set to shut its Trowbridge store in the Gateway Shopping Centre during the first week of January. The bike retailer has already begun its closing-down sale, offering customers 20 per cent off selected items.
