The nationally ranked Dinos women’s basketball team kicks off the home weekend for Calgary this weekend, hosting a pair of games against MacEwan. The provincial rivals come to campus Friday at 6 p.m. before Saturday’s 4 p.m. rematch. Both games will take place inside the Jack Simpson Gym.
Calgary – now ranked seventh in the nation – suffered its first setback of the season last weekend, dropping a pair of tight top-10 battles at Alberta. The Dinos and Pandas were neck and neck in both games the whole way, but the UofA found a way to squeak things out to send Calgary to 2-2 start after opening the year with two wins over preseason favourite Saskatchewan.
MacEwan enters the weekend coming off an early bye week, sitting at 0-2 after opening the year with a pair of home losses to Mount Royal. The Griffins sport a young roster this season, with just one fourth-year player, zero fifth years and nine first or second-year players.
This will mark the first conference game between the two provincial schools in nearly two years, with Calgary sweeping that series with an average margin of victory of 21.

The No. 3 Dinos men’s basketball team also returns home this weekend to take on MacEwan. Tip time is set for 8 p.m. Friday and 6 p.m. Saturday following the women’s game both days. Both games will take place inside the home of the Dinos – the Jack Simpson Gym.
Head coach Dan Vanhooren’s team moved to 4-0 on the year after a pair of convincing wins in the annual Battle of Alberta, downing the Golden Bears by 11 on Friday before a 19-point victory Saturday. Nate Petrone led the way in the series, racking up a combined 49 points as he continues his torrid start to the season as the leading scorer in all of U SPORTS with an average of 24.5 points per game through the first two weeks.
MacEwan comes to campus with an 0-2 record after dropping its season-opening games to Mount Royal. The Griffins nearly ended their extended conference losing streak – which has now hit 70 games – in the season opener, but fell by three to MRU. MacEwan should have some fresh legs this weekend, as they are coming off a Week 2 bye.
Calgary is a perfect 10-0 against MacEwan since they joined Canada West back in the 2016-17 season. The two teams haven’t played since Nov. 18-19, 2022, when the Dinos won two games at home by a combined 35 points.

Calgary’s women’s hockey team will continue its four-game homestand this weekend, hosting No. 2 UBC. The Dinos and T-Birds will first faceoff Friday at 7 p.m. inside Father David Bauer Arena, before Saturday’s rematch at 3 p.m.
The Dinos picked up a big three points against Regina last weekend to move to 5-3-2 on the year. That is good for 12 points and keeps them in third place in the Canada West – West Division standings through 10 games.
Calgary is still adjusting to the departure of Canada West All-Star goaltender Gabriella Durante, who is off to pursue the Olympic dream of playing for Team Italy at the upcoming 2026 Game in Milan. Amelia Awad is making notable strides while playing all nine games for the Scarlet & Gold since, posting a 5-3-1 record with a shutout in her most recent performance.
UBC comes to town with a 10-2 record, leading the West Division with 20 points through 12 games played. The T-Birds have a nation-leading 38 goals scored on the year, but have surrendered 19, as well.
The two teams already squared off in Calgary to open the 2024-25 conference season, with UBC winning in a shootout in the opener before a 6-3 result the next day.

Riding a four-game win streak, the Dinos men’s hockey team heads west this weekend for two games in Vancouver against UBC. The Canada West Final rematch opens Friday at 8 p.m. before going again Saturday at 4 p.m. MT.
It wasn’t always easy, but Calgary found a way to dispatch of a very game Regina squad last weekend in a pair of road games against the Cougars, finishing with 3-1 wins in both contests. That marks four wins in a row and moves the Dinos to 6-3-1 on the year for 13 points – good for a tie with UBC in the Canada West – West Division standings, though the T-Birds have played two more games. Both teams are just one point shy of Mount Royal for the top spot in the division nearing the halfway point of the conference season.
UBC starts an extended stretch where they play just one game away from home from now until late January. The Thunderbirds are 6-5 on the year but are coming off an impressive weekend where they swept Mount Royal, with convincing 5-2 scorelines in both performances.
This weekend marks the second head-to-head series for two of the Canada West powerhouse programs already this season, with the Dinos sweeping the defending conference champs in Vancouver back on Oct. 4-5 to open the year.
