A 24-year-old woman has died in hospital after a pickup truck drove into a Boston Pizza in downtown Fort McMurray on Saturday.

Wood Buffalo RCMP say that at 11:36 a.m., officers and firefighters responded to reports that a Ford pickup truck had crashed through the side of the restaurant. A woman was critically injured in the crash and brought to the Northern Lights Regional Health Centre. Police say she later died from her injuries.

Cpl. Troy Savinkoff, a spokesperson for Alberta RCMP, said in an interview the woman was an employee of the restaurant and inside when the collision happened. Police are not releasing her name.

“The Alberta RCMP give our sincere condolences to the families, friends and loved ones of the deceased. This is a profound loss of life for the family, and the community as a whole,” said a statement from RCMP.

Police have arrested the driver of the truck and remains in custody. The driver will be identified publicly once charges are sworn in.
