A motoring expert has revealed a simple yet effective change that could boost the fuel economy of vehicles by up to 30%. Despite the Labour Government’s surprising decision to freeze fuel duty for 2025, many drivers are still seeking ways to make their vehicles more cost-effective.

Howard Cox, founder of FairFuel UK, a campaign group for petrol and diesel, highlighted that minor adjustments to driving habits and choice of refuelling location can make a significant difference. He stated: “Up to 30 % lower fill-up costs can be achieved if common sense practical approaches are adhered to.

“Remove the boy racer from your psyche. Don’t idle in traffic jams; switch off when stationary in traffic.”

While it may be tempting to accelerate hard on quiet stretches of road, aggressive acceleration and braking can drastically increase fuel consumption. Drivers aiming to improve fuel efficiency should accelerate gently, keep an eye on the road ahead for potential obstacles requiring them to slow down or stop, and apply brakes smoothly well in advance.

For manual vehicles, shifting up a gear when the engine hits 2,500rpm can optimise fuel economy, reports the Express. Howard also advised drivers to be discerning about where they purchase fuel, as cheaper petrol and diesel from supermarkets can often prove pricier in the long run.

He recommended: “Regarding the fuel, use the best and most reputable brands with widely available additives that lower emissions and improve consumption.” Although supermarket fuels are often significantly cheaper, many do not contain the additives and conditioners found in premium alternatives, which can help clean the fuel system and improve efficiency in high-end models.
