Tributes have been paid to a “talented footballer” from Co Fermanagh who died in a car accident on Thursday morning.
Mark Johnston from the Newtownbutler area in the county is understood to come from a well-known family.
Police received a report, shortly after midnight on November 7, of a single vehicle collision on the Lisnaskea Road.
Emergency services attended but Mr Johnston was pronounced dead at the scene.
The 28-year-old played for Magherveeley Football Club and the team has postponed all club activities as a result of the devastating news.
The club posted a statement on social media saying: “Everyone involved with Magheraveely Football Club is devastated at the tragic death of our player, Mark Johnston.
“Mark has been an important player, teammate and friend to everyone in the club for the last number of years.
“Which is a testament to his popularity within the club. As a result, all club activities will be postponed until further notice.
“Mark was the dearly beloved son of William and Valerie. Dear brother of Emma, Stuart, Matthew, Joshua, Benjamin, and the late Leah. Boyfriend of Jayne, Grandson of Wesley and Edna Cartwright and Mavis and the late William Johnston.”
The club play in the Fermanagh and Western football league who also expressed their sympathy saying: “The management committee of the FWFL wish to extend our sincere condolences to the Johnston family, on the sudden passing of Mark.
“Mark was a talented footballer and member of Magheraveely. We would like to pass on our sympathy to his team mates and the entire club.”
Ballinamallard United FC commented: “Terrible tragedy. Sincere sympathy to the Johnston family, his friends and all at Magheraveely FC.”
