Prince William’s devastation at his wife and father being diagnosed with cancer and their subsequent battles against the disease has been laid bare in a raw and emotional interview.

The Prince of Wales called 2024 the hardest year of his life, describing it as dreadful and brutal.

It is rare to be given such an intimate insight into the Prince of Wales’s feelings on a matter as personal as this.

William spoke about the difficulty he faced trying to get through everything else on his plate and staying on track during this period of uncertainty.

The prince also made clear his feelings of pride regarding the way both Kate and King Charles have handled their cancer battles.

The princess has made three public appearances since her cancer diagnosis including attending Trooping the Colour in June, Wimbledon in July and undertaking her first joint public engagement with Prince William in Southport last month.

In September, Kate confirmed that she had completed her course of preventative chemotherapy treatment.

Prince William also provided a health update on the Princess of Wales during his interview in South Africa, saying: “She’s doing well. Doing well.”

King Charles stepped back from royal duties for a couple of months once his cancer diagnosis was confirmed.

However, the monarch returned to undertaking public engagements in late April.

Kate and King Charles’s health concerns have rocked members of the Royal Family.

Prince William said during his interview: “From a personal family point of view, it’s been, yeah, it’s been brutal.”

William and Kate share three young children, Prince George, 11, Princess Charlotte, nine and Prince Louis, six.

The Princess of Wales confirmed in her message to the world announcing her diagnosis in March 2024 that her children were aware of her condition.

Despite King Charles’s determination to carry out royal duties both domestically and abroad, there has been concern about his health and questions have been raised about whether he is pushing himself too much.

The King and Queen undertook a gruelling journey to Australia and Samoa in October for the monarch’s first official tour since being diagnosed with cancer.

King Charles decided to pause his cancer treatment during the royal tour.

Queen Camilla had often hinted that she felt King Charles should slow down over the previous few months but the monarch has kept himself busy.

During the royal couple’s final engagement in Samoa, Charles said: “I shall always remain devoted to this part of the world and hope that I survive long enough to come back and see you.”

Camilla looked visibly moved during her husband’s speech and his words would have been emotional to hear for all members of the monarchy.

This time it was Prince William on an international engagement in South Africa for the fourth instalment of The Earthshot Prize.
