A person was killed and a police officer was hospitalized with serious injuries after an incident in Orillia on Thursday afternoon.

The province’s Special Investigations Unit said in a statement on social media that it was investigating an officer-involved shooting on Cochrane St. in Orillia just before 2 p.m.

The OPP’s Central Region detachment said the officer was stabbed and discharged their weapon during an investigation in the area, which followed a public safety alert asking pedestrians and drivers to stay away from Cochrane between West St. S. and Matchedash St. S.

“The OPP will not be providing any further information,” the detachment’s social media account posted on X, referring any questions to the SIU.

The SIU was unable to provide an update as of early Thursday evening, saying they were waiting to notify the deceased’s next of kin.

The Ontario Provincial Police Association said in a statement that the officer was in stable condition at a hospital.

“We are keeping all first responders and everyone impacted by this situation today in our thoughts,” the statement on X said.

Orillia Matters, citing an OPP news release, said officers responded to a report of an altercation on Barrie Rd. before the investigation led them to an address on Cochrane, where they allegedly located one of the people involved.

The report also said social media users reported hearing gunfire in the area before the shooting was confirmed.
