Public toilets will be opening in the city centre for the first time since many were closed by Bristol City Council six years ago. The new toilets form part of the city’s Christmas Market in Broadmead and can be found on Callowhill Court.

It is unknown when the toilets will open to the public. At the moment, the closest public toilets are at Cabot Circus and the Galleries shopping centres. Cafes and fast food restaurants provide toilets but are often guarded with a code.

In 2018, the vast majority of public toilets were closed by the council and replaced with a community toilets scheme. The idea was to list locations across the city showing toilets which can be accessed without purchasing anything.

Despite this, the scheme has faced issues including out-of-date data since the scheme launched, it was reported in 2023. It included several toilets which were listed being unavailable for public use and one pub which had long shut down.

Previously, public toilets were located at the Bearpit just outside Broadmead. However, these were closed down due to anti-social behaviour.
