Prince William left fans feeling “underwhelmed and disappointed” with what they believed was a “strange” style choice.

The Prince of Wales, alongside stars like Billy Porter and Nomzamo Mbatha, arrived on the green carpet for the Earthshot Prize Awards at Green Point Shared Fields in Cape Town on Wednesday evening.

This was day three of William’s visit to South Africa for the fourth annual Earthshot Prize Awards.

The 42-year-old donned a vintage-sourced blazer for the occasion, in keeping with the sustainable values of Earthshot.

He paired this with an Ecoalf light blue Alfredo shirt, which retails for £90.90.

The future King also donned £130 white trainers from the brand Purified.

Royal fans expressed that they felt “underwhelmed” by William’s outfit, which many viewed looked “underdressed” for an evening event.

One said: “This is a daytime outfit @KensingtonRoyal, I needed the glitz and glam evening and colour. This just looks like any old engagement.”

Another wrote: “Good for him for wearing eco-friendly clothes! BUT, I’m not loving this look on him – something is off.”

A third posted: “I love Prince William – and I understand the look – but I’m underwhelmed and disappointed. Common, William, this is the GREEN CARPET, and you’re a PRINCE!”

Similarly, a royal watcher added: “He seems uncharacteristically underdressed compared to his hosts – I wonder why? There must have been a dress code.”

Another fan wrote: “Great for daytime, but somewhat underwhelming for Global Gala Prize Giving Event for something as big as Earthshot! My view!”

A social media user commented: “William appears underdressed to me, especially in the sneakers and no tie at all!

“While I love the sustainable clothing, he’s worn a suit/tux before to present the winners in the past.”

Someone else said: “Isn’t he too casual for a formal event? I’m sure there is sustainable formal wear or a rewear could do well.”

One royal fan posted: “Very nice, but I would have liked a little more dress-up today; or perhaps a local cultural touch.”

Finally, someone added: “Interesting choices. I was hoping to see the Tom Ford velvet jacket he wore to the BAFTA’s with Princess Catherine.”

However, some fans were perfectly happy with Prince William’s casual attire.

One said: “I love his look, he’s been looking great and helping the world. I love how he seems excited and relaxed with all these wonderful people and their ideas.”

Another commented: “That blazer was a great find. I love it on him!”
