The home weekend for the Calgary Dinos starts Friday when the women’s volleyball team returns to campus for their first of two games against rival Mount Royal, with first serve set for 6 p.m. from inside the Jack Simpson Gym. Saturday’s rematch is set for 5:30 p.m.

Calgary returns home after splitting on the road in Regina last week. The Dinos also opened their season with a big split – with both matches going the full five sets – against defending conference champion Manitoba.

Mount Royal comes to The Jack also sitting at 2-2 in the early going, after losses to Fraser Valley and wins against Saskatchewan.

Last season, the Dinos and Cougars split their season series.

After a week off, the Dinos men’s volleyball team also returns home for the first Crowchild Classic series of the season. It all starts Friday following the women’s game for a scheduled 7:30 p.m. start. Saturday’s action is set to get underway at 4 p.m. Both matches will take place inside the Jack Simpson Gym.

Calgary opened the year with a big five-set win over Manitoba – the first for first year head coach and former Dinos standout player Graham Vigrass.

The Cougars come to campus at 2-2 thus far after sweeping UFV to start the year before falling in back-to-back matches to Saskatchewan last weekend.

MRU won both its games against the Dinos a year ago after Calgary swept the Cougars in the 2022-23 postseason.

Calgary’s women’s hockey team will play on home ice for its next four games in a row, starting this weekend when Regina comes to Father David Bauer Arena for two. Friday’s contest gets underway at 7 p.m., while Saturday’s start time is slatted for 5 p.m.

The Dinos – who sit just outside the national top-10 poll – enjoyed a week off to start the month of November after a weekend split against Trinity Western. After one month of action, Calgary sits in third in the tight Canada West West Division with a 4-3-1 record.

Regina comes to town with an impressive 5-1-2 mark, sweeping Saskatchewan and Manitoba before splitting with MacEwan to start the year. Last weekend, the Cougars hosted TWU and dropped both games.

The Cougars proved to be a thorn in the Dinos side a season ago. All four matchups finished with just a one-goal difference, but three of the four went the way of Regina. Calgary still holds a 9-5 edge in ther series dating back to the start of the 2019-20 season.

The No. 10 Dinos men’s hockey team is back after a week off, heading to Regina for two games against the Cougars. Friday’s puck drop is set for 6 p.m. MT, while Saturday’s rematch has a 4 p.m. MT start time.

It has been an incredibly tough start to the year for the Dinos. They faced ranked foes in all six of their first games, sweeping defending champs UBC before falling to Saskatchewan and Mount Royal. All this while being hit extremely hard by the injury bug and Calgary sits at 4-3-1 on the year, pummeling Trinity Western to close out the opening month before having a week off this past weekend.

The Dinos now turn their attention to Regina, who heads into the weekend with a 1-7 record and a minus-24 goal differential.

Calgary has won the last eight against the Cougars in the series and 20 of the last 21 regular season games dating back to 2017.

After sweeping the preseason favourite Saskatchewan, the Dinos women’s basketball now hits the road for yet another stiff test to start the year with a trip north to take on Alberta as part of a weekend doubleheader. Friday’s tip time is scheduled for 6 p.m., while the rematch is set for 5 p.m. Saturday. Both games will take place inside the Saville Centre.

The Dinos – who start the year ranked No. 3 in the opening U SPORTS top 10 – made a statement start to the year with the sweep of Saskatchewan at home last weekend. It marked the first sweep of the Huskies by the Dinos since 2012-13, doing so in dramatic fashion. Calgary was in control of Friday’s game the majority of the second half and won by 10 before Myriam Kone was needed for Saturday’s win as the third-year guard hit a jumper with 4.9 left to give her squad a 65-63 victory. For her efforts, Kone was named the Canada West Athlete of the Week.

Alberta was idle last weekend, with this weekend’s games marking their season opener. Despite not playing a conference game yet, the Pandas are ranked ninth in the nation in the first poll and have plenty of expectations after back-to-back trips to the U SPORTS Final 8, just like Calgary.

The Battle of Alberta has had plenty of extra flair to it over the past few seasons. The two teams split both regular season matchups the past two years and have also battled in the postseason three times over the last two years, with all three going to the UofA.

The No. 3 Dinos men’s basketball team is off to Edmonton to take on the University of Alberta for two games this weekend, starting Friday. The provincial rivals will open up Friday at 8 p.m. inside the Saville Centre, before Saturday’s showdown at 7 p.m. Both games are set to follow the women’s competition.

It was a smooth opening weekend for head coach Dan Vanhooren’s club, cruising to wins over Saskatchewan by 18 and 50 points last time out. Nate Petrone led the way with 30 and 19 points in just 51 minutes on the court. As a whole, the Dinos shot 49.3 percent from the floor in the opener and 56.5 percent overall in Saturday’s rout, including an noteworthy 17-32 performance from behind the arc.

The Golden Bears opened the conference slate on a bye after a 6-2 showing in preseason action. Alberta was picked sixth in the preseason coaches’ poll after finishing tied with UBC for fourth a season ago.

Calgary and Alberta battled three times a season ago, with all three going the way of the Scarlet & Gold, including a 76-70 win in Manitoba in last year’s conference tournament to send the Dinos to the semifinals.

Dinos Cross Country

The fall sports season officially wraps up this weekend with the running of the 2024 U SPORTS Cross Country Championships, hosted this year by UBCO at the Mission Recreation Park in Kelowna, B.C.

Calgary will be looking to end the year on a high note. The Dinos finished sixth on both the men’s and women’s side at the Canada West Championships two weeks ago, but had four individuals earn all-conference honours following the race. Max Cook was named a second team all-star, while Sophie Jensen, Csenia Irvin and Natalie Selvage all were named to the CW All-Rookie Team.

The Dinos have won five national titles in program history – three on the women’s side and two on the men’s, with the men’s banners coming in back-to-back years in 2018 and 2019.

Following this race, the Dinos will then turn their attention to the start of the track & field season, with the annual Dino Opener scheduled for Dec. 8 inside the Jack Simpson Gym.
