American college Notre Dame have released a special ice hockey jersey for the upcoming Friendship Four tournament at the SSE Arena at the end of the month.

The Indiana college, whose sports teams are all nicknamed the Fighting Irish, will face Harvard University in the Semi-Final on November 29 before playing either Boston University or Merrimack College the following day depending on whether they win or lose.

While there is no universally accepted origin as to where the Fighting Irish moniker comes from, the famous university have fully adopted the name for their visit to Belfast and will be decked out in specially tailored gear for their two games.

The letters and numbers on the jerseys are detailed to look like those in the Book of Kells with the Celtic knot running through them, along with a new logo for the team specifically for the tournament.

The college have chosen to stick with their traditional navy primary colour for the jersey, which they will definitely wear against Harvard as the designated ‘home’ team, while it remains to be seen if they will need to switch to their road white for Saturday’s game.

Notre Dame boast several future NHL prospects on their roster and will be one of the teams to watch at this year’s Friendship Four, with New York Islanders second round draft pick Danny Nelson and Philadelphia Flyers fourth round selection Cole Knuble among their stars.
