A fresh petition has been set up, demanding a reversal of changes to the Winter Fuel Payment eligibility, with warnings that pensioners could potentially die due to the policy. Previously, most individuals of state pension age received the payment, but now recipients must also be on a means-tested benefit to qualify for the support.

This change implies that millions will no longer receive the payment, which is worth £200 or £300 this year. The petition, launched on the Parliament petition website, calls for an immediate return to the previous eligibility criteria.

The petition states: “We want the Government to restore the Winter Fuel Payment to how it was paid last winter immediately. We are concerned that pensioners could die if MPs do not act, and that the NHS could be under more pressure.”

The full petition can be read here. At the time of writing, around 1,400 people have signed the petition.

If you’re set to miss out on the payment this year, it’s worth checking if you can claim Pension Credit, as this is a significantly underclaimed benefit. The benefit provides an income top-up for those on a low income, offering a top-up up to £218.15 a week if you’re single or up to £332.95 if you have a partner.

Those who earn above these amounts may still be eligible, as there are additional payments depending on your circumstances, such as if you care for another adult. Claiming this support grants access to a range of other Government support, including free TV licences for those aged 75 and over.

Individuals receiving the benefit are also eligible for council tax reductions and assistance with NHS dental care and other health services.
