Phil ‘The Power’ Taylor, the legendary 16-time World Champion, is set to make a return to darts, but not as a player.
The 63-year-old will take on media duties as a commentator for the upcoming World Senior Darts Tour in Washington, North East England, on November 8 and 9.
Taylor had initially planned to compete in the event for former pros over 50, but was forced to withdraw due to injury.
“I tore what you call your scar tissue doing a little bit of work too quick,” Taylor explained to the Northern Echo.
Taylor’s affection for the North East is evident in his reminiscences.
Speaking to the Northern Echo, he shared, “I used to love playing in the North East. I used to stay at Whitley Bay at one time in the guest houses there.”

The darts icon particularly fell for Cullercoats, a coastal town near Newcastle.
“Cullercoats I fell in love with. I nearly bought a house there. I love Cullercoats I thought it was beautiful,” Taylor revealed.
He added wistfully, “Back then, a nice house on the front of the beach was about £150,000. I think it’s about 500 and odd thousand now, I wish I’d have bought 10!”

Taylor’s decision to retire from competitive darts was not taken lightly. Speaking to talkSPORT in October, he explained, “I’m retired now, properly retired.”
The physical toll of the sport became increasingly apparent. “My eyes started going a few years ago then my hip went and then the travelling,” Taylor revealed.

He also cited the impact on family life as a factor. “You’re away from home four-five days a week and it’s good for money but it’s not good for your family,” he said.
Despite his retirement, Taylor’s passion for darts remains evident. “My mind is still in my teens but my body is 90,” he quipped.
Despite his retirement, Taylor remains optimistic about the future of senior darts competitions.

Speaking to the Northern Echo, he said, “I think the Seniors will push on now some of the older names are beginning to drop down the rankings I think they’ll come over.”
