Police are currently in attendance at the scene of an ongoing security alert after a device was thrown through the window of an elderly couple’s home in Derry.

Cordons have been put in place in the Limewood Street area of the city, with ATO also tasked to the scene.

SDLP MP for Foyle, Colum Eastwood, said there was “no excuse” for the attack.

“An elderly couple have had a device thrown through their window in what must have been a shocking and distressing attack on their home,” he said.

“There is no excuse for it. The people responsible have caused an immense amount of disruption for this family and the local community.

“If anyone has information about this attack I would encourage them to bring it forward to the police.”

Sinn Féin councillor for Derry City and Strabane District Council, Sandra Duffy, said the incident was “totally wrong”.

“There is no place or excuse for this type of activity,” she said.

“I would urge anyone with information on this incident to bring it forward to the PSNI.”

A PSNI spokesperson said: “Police are currently at the scene of a security alert in the Limewood Street area of Derry/Londonderry. Please avoid the area.”
