As we enter November, just like the weather flipped on a dime, so too will crashes on our roadways.
Every year, winter weather presents Canadian drivers with challenging conditions.
So, it should be no surprise that December, January and November are the Top 3 months, in that order, when it comes to highest volume for insurance claims due to a collision, according to data from Allstate Insurance Company of Canada.
From new drivers to motorists who have been driving in Canada their entire lives, the reasons for collision complaints in colder weather conditions are endless — some of which make sense, while others appear to have nothing to do with being behind the wheel.
From fewer daylight hours, reduced visibility and slippery roads, to stress from work as year-end nears, holiday preparations or simply excitement to kick off the weekend, or perhaps a combination of factors, Allstate notes it can be the most challenging time for many Canadian drivers.
“Anyone can get a little rusty from one year to another, and even forget to apply some basic adjustments while at the wheel as the weather becomes colder,” Odel Laing, agency manager at Allstate, said in a press release. “Combine that with a packed holiday schedule and the risk of a collision can rise.”

The report, which analyzed its internal data from the last two years (Sept. 1, 2022 to Aug. 31, 2024), also noted Friday afternoons, particularly in December, are even more problematic.
Half of all incidents take place between 12 p.m. and 6 p.m., the data also found.
The most common collision-related claims are rear-end crashes, hits to parked cars, and changing lanes.
