Steve Bruce, the manager of Blackpool FC, has released a heartfelt statement following the tragic death of his four-month-old grandson, Madison.
The former Manchester United defender expressed his gratitude for the support received from the football community during this difficult time.
Bruce confirmed his return to managerial duties for Blackpool’s upcoming FA Cup first round match against Gillingham at Bloomfield Road on Saturday.
The statement, shared on Blackpool’s social media platform X, revealed the profound impact of the loss on Bruce’s family.
Bruce’s statement began with a poignant acknowledgement of the family’s loss: “On Tuesday we laid my grandson Madison to rest.
It’s been the worst time of my family’s entire lives, and is something no family should have to endure.”

He went on to express his gratitude: “I’d like to take this opportunity on behalf of all the family to thank everyone for the tributes and messages from inside and outside the footballing world. It has touched us all.”
Bruce also thanked Blackpool FC’s leadership, stating: “I’d also like to thank David, Julian and the owner Simon for their understanding and support.”
During Bruce’s absence, Blackpool struggled to find form. The team failed to secure a win in their three matches without their manager.
They suffered a 2-1 defeat to Barnsley and a heavy 5-1 loss to Duncan Ferguson’s Peterborough.
Their only point came from a 2-2 draw with Wigan.
Bruce’s son Alex, who is the assistant manager at Salford City, also took time away from his duties during this period.
