Plans for a kebab van based on the corner of a busy junction have sparked road safety concerns among locals. Muzzy’s Kebabs in Bradley Stoke could set up shop on the corner, if a group of councillors give their permission.

Mehmet Isitmen has applied to South Gloucestershire Council for a street trading consent for Woodlands, off Woodland Lane. Councillors in a licensing hearing will vote on whether to approve the application on November 13.

The kebab van would be allowed to open from 5pm to 11pm, seven days a week. Four local residents have written to the council, objecting to the application. They raised concerns about road safety, litter and noise.

One said: “Woodlands Road is a narrow road. The presence of a static van at the location proposed would undoubtedly create a serious safety hazard for motorists and pedestrians alike. Not only is Woodlands a narrow road, but when turning left into the road, visibility is so poor that the van is unlikely to be seen until the last moment.

“Increased noise pollution would inevitably result, particularly during the late evening hours when children are attempting to sleep. The presence of a noisy and brightly lit van would disturb the peace and tranquillity of our residential area.”

Another added: “I fully appreciate that Muzzy’s Kebabs is very popular and the owner of the business is a very likeable man, but I do think that the location of this application is extremely unsuitable. The road is narrow, only just allowing two cars to pass each other at a time.

“During the week, cars park on the opposite side of the road from the application, so how will other cars pass if the kebab van is there? I hope this application will be refused and a more suitable place for the kebab van can be found further into the middle of the office estate.”

The hearing was originally scheduled for Monday, October 28, but has been postponed.
