When it comes to a tasty side dish that complements a wide variety of meals, chips are a hard-to-beat option. This quintessential British comfort food is a staple for many, and its versatility means it can be paired with numerous dishes, always guaranteed to please.

While it’s easy to grab a bag of frozen chips and bake them, making a delicious batch from scratch is also surprisingly simple. Even better, with an air fryer, you can achieve this in just 20 minutes – and according to a TikTok chef, the result will be the ‘best’ chips you’ve ever tasted.

London-based chef and author Sam Stern, who has penned seven cookbooks, shared his air fryer chips recipe on social media, garnering over 635.2K views. The chef is utilising his expertise to teach people how to use the air fryer, with the chips video being the first in his ‘air fryer basics’ series.

He stated: “We all want those crispy delicious fries without the hassle of deep fat frying. Here they are! Full of flavour, soft in the middle and crisp on the outside.”

Having tested numerous recipes, the chef declares this one the clear winner. Fans of the recipe flocked to the comments, with one user saying: “They look great and tasty,” while another described them as ‘top quality’, reports the Express.

Here’s what you need to make this classic dish.

Air fryer chips

Ingredients

  • 3-4 medium/large Maris Piper potatoes
  • Half tsp bicarbonate of soda
  • Three tbsp olive oil
  • One tsp oregano
  • One tsp garlic powder
  • One tsp smoked paprika
  • One tsp salt
  • Spray vegetable oil

Method

Start by slicing the potatoes into 1cm batons.

Sam suggests cutting off the bottom of the potato to create a flat surface for stability, making the cutting process easier. Then, add these to a large pan filled with cold water, salt, and bicarbonate of soda.

Bring this mixture to a boil and let it cook for about five minutes or until the potatoes are tender enough to be pierced easily with a knife. Once done, drain them and let them dry on a baking tray until they’re cool.

In the meantime, prepare a mix of oil, oregano, garlic powder, paprika, and salt. Drizzle this over the potatoes and gently stir to ensure all pieces are coated.

Next, spray the base of your air fryer with some oil and preheat it to 200C/392F. Add the fries in a single layer and let them cook for 10-15 minutes until they turn crisp and golden.

If your air fryer is small, you might need to repeat this step. Finally, season with a bit more salt if desired, and your fries are ready to serve.
