Former football pundit Mark Lawrenson has suggested Mark Chapman as a potential successor to Gary Lineker as the presenter of Match of the Day.

Speaking to Metro, Lawrenson described Chapman as a “ready-made replacement” for the long-standing host.

Lawrenson, who worked alongside Lineker for many years, emphasised that the decision to leave should be Lineker’s alone.

“He has earned the right to make his own decision, there is no doubt there whatever,” Lawrenson stated.

The comments come amidst speculation about Lineker’s future on the iconic BBC programme, which he has presented for 25 years.

Lawrenson highlighted the significance of the Match of the Day presenter role, comparing Lineker to his predecessors.

“Before him, Des [Lynam] and Jimmy Hill did it for years and were wonderful but at the end of it all, your time comes,” he remarked.

The former Liverpool star also noted the emotional impact of leaving the programme.

“When you first leave it feels like someone has chopped your arm off,” Lawrenson said.

Despite the speculation, Lawrenson believes Lineker will have the final say on his departure.

“The good thing for Gary is, I think he will decide. I don’t think the BBC will decide,” he added.

Mark Chapman currently presents Match of the Day 2, the Sunday edition of the programme. He has also worked for Sky Sports and covered the Rugby League World Cup for the BBC.

Lawrenson believes Chapman’s experience makes him well-suited for the role. “In Chappers, there is a ready-made replacement if it goes that way,” he said.

However, Lawrenson stressed that the decision ultimately lies with Lineker. “It will be up to Gary,” he added.

Despite the challenges, Lawrenson believes Lineker has options.

“He’s in his 60s now, I’m not sure what else he has going on that could possibly be a substitute for Match Of The Day,” he said, adding, “But he can do whatever he wants.”
