Gary Lineker has beaten Gary Neville when it comes to the best-paid football pundits in the country.

The BBC presenter has been the host of Match of the Day ever since 1999 but, at the current moment in time, his long-term future is up in the air.

Lineker’s deal with the Beeb is due to expire and there have been rumours that he could be replaced.

BBC sports chief Alex Kay-Jelski is said to be eyeing a younger host for the show in order to attract more viewers, while he also reportedly has concerns over Lineker’s outspoken nature.

A report from The Sun has now listed the highest-paid pundits.

And Lineker sits at the summit, with the 63-year-old paid around £1,350,000 every 12 months.

That’s more than Neville, with the former Manchester United star earning £1.1m on an annual basis.

In addition to his duties with Sky Sports, he also works for ITV and covered the European Championships for the broadcaster earlier in the summer.

Third on the list is Jamie Carragher.

Like Neville, he often appears on Sky Sports – while the former Liverpool star is also a regular on CBS Sports’ Champions League coverage.

The ex-England international is reportedly paid £1m-a-year, which is substantially more than Alan Shearer – who sits in fourth.

Shearer, who is the Premier League’s highest-ever goalscorer, pockets between £380,000 and £384,999.

Also making up the rest of the top five is Mark Chapman.

The BBC presenter reportedly earns £260,000 and, with Lineker’s future up in the air, has been linked with the Match of the Day job.

Alex Scott, Gabby Logan, Micah Richards and Chris Sutton complete the rest of the list.

Meanwhile, regarding Lineker, it’s also been claimed that the former Tottenham, Leicester and England star is open to taking a pay cut to remain the host of Match of the Day.

And he admitted he loves the show in an interview with BBC Breakfast earlier in the year.

“It depends how long they want me, I suppose,” he said when asked about his future.

“I love doing it at the moment; I’ve still got another year left, at least. So we’ll have to wait and see what happens.

“Obviously it’s another change in football and television and the rights of the Premier League and stuff like that. All of these things will play a part.
