Larne v Shamrock Rovers | Inver Reds’ dream night turns into a nightmare in just 30 minutes

Larne and Shamrock Rovers are ready for what is going to be a huge cross-border European clash as the pair meet at Windsor Park in the UEFA Conference League league phase on Thursday night (kick-off 5.45pm).

The Larne man slides in on Josh Honohan and wipes him out to become the second player cautioned by the referee.

After consulting the monitor, the referee points to the centre circle and it’s a third for Shamrock Rovers!

The corner delivery from Markus Poom is deep to the back post, it gets the slightest glance off the head of Graham Burke to take it on target and it deflects in off Tomas Cosgrove as he tussles with his man at the back post!

It will be Burke’s goal, the header was on target before Cosgrove hit it.

We have a check for a potential third Shamrock Rovers goal as a deep corner goes all the way in. The referee signalled for no goal for a handball as it was bundled in but we await for the VAR official to give his verdict.

And now referee Vasileios Fotias is headed to the monitor to give it a look.

Graham Burke has a glint in his eye as a foul on Darragh Burns just outside the box presents him with the shooting opportunity but his left-footed effort clips the top of the wall and goes high and out for a corner.

He’s only just after judo-throwing Graham Burke to the ground and now Graham goes into the book for what appears to be back-chat to the referee.

It has been coming, Shamrock Rovers have been knocking on the door and finally it opens again!

Cian Bolger turns Danny Mandroiu’s cross behind to concede the corner and although it is headed away initially, a chipped ball over the top sends Graham Burke in behind the defence towards the by-line and he’s able to send the ball towards the back post where Johnny Kenny is completely unmarked to tap in for the visitors’ second!

First one of the game for either side as Levi Ives nods Darragh Burns’ cross behind, but Markus Poom’s delivery is emphatically headed away at the first opportunity.

Nervy moment

Larne nearly gifted a goal as Daniel Cleary’s pass back to Léon Pöhls is weak and Andy Ryan nearly steals in ahead of the goalkeeper, but he’s able to race out and hack it into Row Z to prevent the striker from grabbing an equaliser!

And another chance as Danny Mandroiu plays a lovely ball into the centre of the pitch to find Burke driving forward, he takes a left-footed crack from around 20 yards but Rohan Ferguson is able to dive to his left and make the low save.

Rovers look dangerous

Every time they come forward they look like they could score and the latest effort comes as Danny Mandroiu whips a low ball in that Rohan Ferguson bobbles but eventually holds. But the visitors certainly seem to have the beating of their men when they have the ball at their feet.

What a chance for Larne to equalise as a cross from Sean Graham is only half-cleared to the edge of the box for Joe Thomson, the ball is worked wide for Benji Magee who beats his man to the edge of the box and drives the low cross in straight to the feet of Andy Ryan, but the striker can’t turn it towards goal!

A dangerous delivery upcoming from the left edge of the box for Larne as Sean Graham is felled by Joshua Honohan, but the in-swinging ball from Joe Thomson is over everyone’s head and goes out without anybody touching it.

First chance of the evening for the home side as an inviting cross from the right from Chris Gallagher hangs invitingly for Ryan to attack, but Daniel Cleary just beats him to it and heads clear.

And immediately another opportunity for the visitors as a ball over the top sends Johnny Kenny into the box, but Cian Bolger recovers enough to force him wide and his shot is into the side netting from a tight angle – not sure he could have scored from there if he tried.

A dream start for the visitors and it’s all set up by a brilliant, piercing run from Graham Burke, who takes the ball just inside the Larne half and powers forward down the right, cutting inside the box and taking advantage of some passive Larne defence. His shot is well blocked by Cian Bolger, but the rebound falls right into the path of Honohan on the left edge of the box and he’s able to rifle his shot low to Rohan Ferguson’s right for the opening goal!

The entire game has been played in the Larne half so far and Shamrock Rovers have their due reward!

The players are back in their dressing rooms ahead of kick-off and the Shamrock Rovers fans are giving it stacks on the opposite side to us. The stadium might be relatively empty given its size but there should be a great atmosphere here.

Teams out for warm-up

The Shamrock Rovers fans are in Windsor Park early, we’re expecting around 1,600 of them in the stand opposite the cameras.

With just over 2,000 Larne fans joining them, we are set for a crowd of around 4,000 in here this evening.
