Drivers across the UK have been warned that they risk being locked out their cars this autumn as a critical safety feature in millions of vehicles fails.
Experts have highlighted growing frustration among motorists experiencing problems with their key fobs which has left millions of Britons unable to access their vehicles.
The warning comes after social media searches for “Why is my key fob not working” have more than doubled over the past year, indicating widespread concern. On TikTok alone, there are 30 million videos related to dead car key fobs.
The issue is particularly relevant as most new car models now rely on battery-operated keys to unlock and start vehicles.

But as temperatures drop, these key fobs become more susceptible to failure, potentially leaving drivers locked out of their cars.
Cold weather can significantly impact car key fob functionality. As temperatures drop, the chemical reactions inside the battery slow down, reducing its capacity by up to 30 per cent. This means a key fob with a battery already below 30 per cent charge may fail to work in cold conditions.
To maintain key fob functionality, Auto Trader recommended keeping keys in a warm place when not in use.
Drivers should consider storing keys in insulated spaces like clothes drawers at home, or in secure pockets close to the body when out in cold weather.
Experts alsoadvised replacing car key batteries every two to six years. Signs of a low battery include reduced signal range and decreased responsiveness.
To avoid unexpected issues, drivers should have their mechanic check the key battery during annual car services.
A viral TikTok video, amassing over 500,000 views, has shown drivers how to unlock their car if the key fob battery dies.
The hack involves using a hidden mechanical key within the fob to pry open the door handle, exposing a lock cylinder and key slot.
While this method can be useful in emergencies, Auto Trader’s leasing experts caution drivers to be careful.
They warn that damage caused by this technique could result in charges at the end of a lease agreement.
“Most smart keys are equipped with an emergency blade with a mechanical fob inside in case of emergencies,” Auto Trader experts commented.
They added that minor scratches may be acceptable under fair wear and tear policies, but significant damage should be reported to leasing companies and insurance providers.
