To create a luxurious haven in your bathroom, essentials such as soft fluffy towels are a must-have. There’s nothing quite like the embrace of a warm towel fresh off the radiator on a cold day, reminiscent of the indulgence experienced at upscale hotels or lavish spas.

But if your towels have lost their plush feel and you’re not keen on buying new ones, what can you do? Over time, towels can become scratchy and less inviting due to residue from detergents, hard water, or improper drying methods.

However, fans of cleaning sensation Mrs Hinch have discovered a cost-effective solution to restore your towels’ fluffiness.

Mrs Hinch, the beloved cleaning guru and mother of two, is well-known for her home care tips, inspiring an army of followers who form online communities to exchange cleaning and household advice.

On the Facebook group ‘Mrs Hinch Army Cleaning Tips’, a user named Rob Whiting posed the question, “How do you keep your towels soft? Ours have gone brick-hard. We don’t have a tumble dryer the towels are usually put over an electric airer.”

In response, fellow group member Clare Connery shared how a simple alteration in her laundry routine made a significant difference, reports the Liverpool Echo.

She said: “I stopped using softener reluctantly a few weeks ago after reading posts from members on this group about how bad it is for your washing machine and clothes. I put some soda crystals in my washing machine instead and I can honestly say my towels and washing in general have never been softer.”

Paula Bear also explained: “Soda crystals, never fabric softener. If you do start to use this it takes two to three weeks to get all the build up out of all the towels.”

How do soda crystals make towels fluffy again?

While we all like the feeling of warm, clean towels fresh out of the tumble dryer, using too much detergent or adding fabric softener can cause them to lose absorbency and become stiff and scratchy.

Soda Crystals help remove any unwanted build-up and chemical residue, leaving towels feeling soft, fluffy and absorbent once more.

According to the laundry experts at Dri-Pak, you should add approximately 125ml of soda crystals to your wash load to help soften the water.

For even fluffier towels, they also suggest that a little pre-wash can make all the difference.

They said: “Start by soaking your towels in a warm medium solution of soda crystals for 10 minutes before rinsing thoroughly. Once the towels have been rinsed, wash them in the machine as normal, ensuring you use the amount of detergent that’s recommended.”

For optimal softness rinse and spin the towels well, then dry them thoroughly on a washing line or in a tumble drier on medium heat.
