Storm Ashley: NI public warned of 'danger to life' threat and travel advice issued

A yellow weather warning is in force throughout Northern Ireland until midnight as Storm Ashley arrives.

The Met Office says there is the potential for a ‘danger to life’ threat while the public have also been warned only to travel if absolutely necessary.

What should I do?

The public have been asked to secure loose items outside your home including the likes of binds, garden furniture, sheds and trampolines.
Also consider keeping your phone and a power pack well charged up, with a torch handy in case of a power cut.
Those around the coast have been warned to be aware of large waves to and stay well clear.

What time does the weather warning end?

The warning stretches right through to midnight, with Storm Ashley coming up from the south. Winds are due to strengthen around an expected afternoon peak when gusts could reach 65mph.

With reports of fallen trees also arriving, the public have been warned to travel with extreme care today, and only if absolutely necessary.

There is already a report of flooding on the Shore Road outside Killyleagh, with the road impassable.

Yellow weather warning in force

A Met Office yellow weather warning for wind is in force across NI.
The warning includes a risk that injuries and danger to life could occur from large waves and beach material being thrown onto sea fronts, coastal roads and properties.
There is also the risk of power cuts and damage to roof tiles.
