This winter, special cost of living payments will be available for some of the poorest households. Those struggling to pay their bills could receive hundreds of pounds from local councils through the Household Support Fund (HSF).

Over the winter, people can apply for these payments from their council. Applications will be assessed on a case-by-case basis, with households typically required to demonstrate they are struggling to afford essentials like food, gas and electricity. The amount paid out varies across different local authorities with the crisis fund set to be relaunched for winter 2024/25 after the new Labour Government confirmed its extension.

In the coming weeks, if they haven’t already, councils will be detailing their HSFs. Some may start making payments in October, while others will wait until closer to Christmas, reports Birmingham Live. Residents are advised to keep an eye on their local council’s Household Support Fund and cost of living pages online for the latest details on when and how to apply.

To be successful, most applicants will need to show they are experiencing ‘financial hardship’ and struggling to pay their bills. They may also need to prove they are receiving benefits, although the Government states that being on benefits is not necessarily a requirement to receive the payments.

The Government said: “You may be able to get help with essential costs from your local council. This is sometimes known as ‘the Household Support Fund’. This could help if you’re struggling to afford things like: energy and water bills; food; essential items. Your council may also offer food vouchers to families during the school holidays. Funding is aimed at anyone who’s vulnerable or cannot pay for essentials. You do not have to be getting benefits to get help from your local council”.
