With the wet winter weather setting in, motorists should be aware of some different rules that are coming into focus and could leave them with fines of up to £1,000. Experts at BigWantsYourCar.com highlighted the lesser-known requirements for drivers during autumn.
The first of which penalises drivers who “neglect their leafy responsibilities”. The experts explained ensuring any leaves or other parts of natural debris that may land on your car during the fall season must be cleared off before you hit the road.
A spokesperson shared: “They can seriously obstruct your visibility. Under Regulation 30 of The Road Vehicles (Construction and Use) Regulations 1986, drivers must ensure that all windows are free from obstructions. Failing to clear leaves from your windscreen could not only compromise your safety but also lead to a fine of up to £1,000.”
This foliage must be cleared from your windscreen, windows and bonnet to ensure it doesn’t create hazardous conditions that could result in an accident. Additionally, certain types of natural build-up around the engine could actually impact how your vehicle operates too.
Even when the leaves aren’t on your car, the danger isn’t entirely gone, as the spokesperson warned: “Wet leaves can be just as dangerous as large puddles, making the road slippery and unsafe.” They recommended safely reducing your speed when you spot these potentially troublesome areas and when driving over them.
They continued: “If it’s safe to do so, avoid them altogether. You also need to be aware that a pothole could be hiding under a pile of leaves.”
