Children are being encouraged this week to do their bit to protect the planet by collecting items that can be recycled.

In National Recycling Week, the goal is to get the public to recycle more. And Re-Gen, a leading recycling company based in Newry, has been marking the occasion by distributing small blue bins to local schools to remind everyone to recycle their waste daily.

“The amount of rubbish generated by householders has been increasing steadily over the last 50 years,” said Joseph Doherty, chief executive of Re-Gen.

“We have delivered small blue bins to local schools as a gentle reminder to recycle their household waste for the good of the planet and future generations.

“We believe that explaining the importance of recycling from a young age is key to encouraging Northern householders to play their part for a decarbonised planet.”

Mr Doherty praised the local children for their recycling efforts.

“Communities across Northern Ireland play a very important role in helping us do our job,” he said.
