Sadly, Jamaican food is certainly something I did not grew up with. However, after a time living on Stapleton Road with the delicious Bikkle Island just over the road, I was quickly converted.

Curry goat, jerk chicken, plantain and festivals; so many yummy options on offer. So, after not eating Jamaican for quite some time, my friends and I decided to have a look on Deliveroo the other evening to see what was on offer.

While the lovely Biblos is the best-rated Caribbean delivering to Bristol East on Deliveroo, we decided to try Gullu’s Kitchen, based on Lodge Causeway, Fishponds, as we had never tried this place before.

Gullu’s Kitchen had an average rating on Deliveroo of 4.6 with more than 500 reviews. Feeling hungry, we decided to go for large portions of everything, which was an extra £2.50, and we certainly got big portions. We all had enough leftover for lunch the following day, as it should be.

The ordering and the delivery was all straight forward, with the food arriving hot. Deciding to share, we all got to try a bit of everything.

The curry goat (£19) – my go-to when ordering Jamaican – had a generous amount of goat in it while the curry itself was full of flavour. We enjoyed having the meat off the bone, and this complemented well with the coleslaw (£2.75) side.

The ackee and saltfish with coleslaw and other sides

I went for the jerk chicken (£19) and, following my friend’s approach of ‘go big or go home’, opted for the hot jerk gravy. I have to admit I was scared this would be too spicy for me and it certainly had some heat, but it wasn’t too much.

The chicken was tender, having deliciously jerk crispy skin. The gravy went really well with it and, if anything, I wish the gravy portion would have been more generous.

Finally, we had ackee and saltfish (£17.50); something that we had never tried and that my friend described as ‘a hug in a meal’. Compared to the other two, this was a more subtle dish with more gentle and delicate textures but equally delicious.

We rounded off our meals with some rice and peas and steamed veg, as well as festivals and plantain. The sweet contrast of these was an excellent match with the rest of the meal.

We were all really impressed with Gullu’s Kitchen and were not surprised they had such a high Deliveroo rating. We will certainly be ordering from there again.

Our meal for three came to £68.38, including £3.39 in fees.
