Wayne Rooney, the former England captain and current Plymouth Argyle boss, has expressed surprise at the Football Association’s decision to appoint Thomas Tuchel as the new England manager.

The German tactician was named as Gareth Southgate’s permanent successor on Wednesday, signing an 18-month contract that will see him through to the end of the 2026 World Cup.

Rooney, who earned 120 caps for his country, admitted his astonishment at the FA’s choice to overlook homegrown talent for the prestigious role.

“I’m surprised. He’s a very good coach but I’m surprised the FA have employed him,” Rooney stated during a press conference on Thursday.

The FA’s decision comes as a surprise to many, given their substantial investment in developing young English coaches over the past decade.

Rooney highlighted this point, stating, “What the FA have built over the last 10-15 years has been a great platform for young coaches coming through, so I’m surprised they haven’t gone with one of their own.”

This sentiment reflects the expectation that a homegrown talent, such as Lee Carsley, who led the Under-21s to European Championship glory in 2023, might have been favoured for the role.

Despite his surprise, Rooney acknowledged Tuchel’s credentials, adding, “But they’ve made the decision and I wish him all the best.”

Rooney’s concerns stem from his own experiences playing under foreign managers for England.

He featured in the national team under Sven-Goran Eriksson and Fabio Capello, offering unique insight into the potential challenges.

“I think it is slightly different when you go to a World Cup or a European Championship and you’re watching your coach watch his home nation,” Rooney remarked.

He added, “I’ve experienced that first hand and it’s not ideal.”

This observation highlights the potential conflict of interest that could arise during major tournaments, where a non-English coach might face divided loyalties.
