One Direction fans in Northern Ireland and around the world are mourning the death of talented singer Liam Payne.

The 31-year-old died after falling from the third floor balcony of a hotel in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

The tragedy has seen tributes flood in from famous faces and One Direction fans.

Northern Ireland fans will recall One Direction being forced to cancel a 2015 Belfast concert at the last minute after Payne became sick and could not go on stage, with many fans finding out after entering the venue.

They had been due to play the first of three gigs in the SSE Arena.

It was later reported that the pressure of fame and being on the road had taken its toll on Liam.

Earlier that year, Zayn Malik left the band citing “stress” and saying he wanted to be a “normal 22-year-old”.

Disappointed fans booed in the SSE Arena as staff instructed them to leave the venue and one witness said “hundreds” of girls and women had been left weeping.

Concert promoter Aiken PR said: “The show tonight has been cancelled as Liam has taken ill, and whilst not serious, he is unable to perform tonight.”

In a statement, the band apologised to their fans.

This was a time when they were performing their final tour before a planned break having formed on X Factor in 2010.

On his Twitter account, band member Harry Styles wrote: “Deepest apologies to everyone at the show tonight in Belfast. Very disappointed, but unfortunately these things happen. We’re very sorry.”

Band mate Louis Tomlinson tweeted: “We’re so so sorry for what happened tonight, it was out of our control! Lots of love to Liam and thank you for being so understanding!”

Only a few months after the Belfast gig cancellation, in January 2016, One Direction announced an “indefinite hiatus”.

In 2013, One Direction held four sold-out gigs in Belfast as part of their Take Me Home Tour.

After the March 8 show, Payne tweeted: “Belfast you were amazingggg! I find it crazy how many people come to see us every night! Best fans everrrr! :)”

He followed that up with another tweet two days later, saying: “Belfast you were amazing, can’t wait to do it all again! I love tourrrring :)”

Last year, the ex-One Direction star was spotted hanging out on the North Coast as he filmed a new travel show.

The singer was photographed at Carrick-a-Rede Rope Bridge in Ballintoy, Co Antrim.

The image was shared on the Facebook page of the National Trust attraction which expressed delight over the celebrity visit.

“Welcome & Service Assistant, Josh, was in his element yesterday when he spotted One Direction star, Liam Payne,” it posted online.

“Josh was more than happy to share his knowledge of the site, and answer any questions Liam had (all in exchange for a pic of course).

“We hope Liam had a fantastic visit to Carrick-a-Rede, and that he enjoys the rest of his time in Northern Ireland.”

The NI visit came just weeks after the former X Factor contestant postponed a tour as he suffered a serious kidney infection.

Performances in South America were put on hold after Payne was taken to hospital that August.

The solo artist apologised to fans and insisted he was following doctor’s orders and planning to “rest and recover” following the health scare.

As a solo act Payne had chart success with songs including Strip That Down and For You (featuring Rita Ora).
