St. Thomas police say they are concerned by the discovery of a replica paper gun at a local high school.

A St. Thomas police officer received what appears to be a “realistic-looking paper gun” from a student at a high school in the south part of the city, police said.

“This type of object could easily be mistaken for a firearm by the police or the public,” police said.

The gun will be destroyed, police said. Anyone who knows about the origin of the gun is asked to contact St. Thomas police at 519-631-1224.

Driver dies following crash north of Chatham

A 77-year-old Chatham man died following a single-vehicle crash north of Chatham, Elgin OPP said.

The crash occurred at about 11:15 a.m. Wednesday on Highway 40 south of Countryview Line, about halfway between Chatham and Wallaceburg.

The Chatham man, who was driving the vehicle and did not have any passengers, was taken to a hospital where he died, Elgin OPP said.

The battered black vehicle came to a stop near the parking lot of Hidden Hills Golf & Country Club.

Highway 40 was closed for hours between Countryview Line and Claymore Line while police investigated the crash.
