Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s potential permanent return to the UK looks further away than ever despite the couple purchasing a home less than a three-hour flight away from London.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have reportedly purchased a holiday home in Portugal.

The couple will most likely use their property in Portugal as their European base as they currently do not have a UK home.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have not had a base in Europe since they were evicted from Frogmore Cottage last year.

The Sussexes’ eviction from the royal residence followed the publication of Prince Harry’s controversial memoir Spare which heavily criticised several senior royals.

Prince Harry returns to the UK several times a year with his most recent trip coming in September to attend the WellChild Awards in London.

The engagement marked the Duke of Sussex’s fourth trip to the UK in 2024 with others coming in February, May and August.

Harry made multiple trips to the UK last year with the most notable one coming at King Charles’s Coronation in May.

However, Meghan Markle has opted not to return to the UK since Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral in September 2022.

Last year, Meghan Markle decided not to join Harry at the 2023 WellChilds Awards in London, instead travelling straight from the US to Germany for the Invictus Games just two days after the engagement.

It was reported that Prince Harry and Meghan enjoyed a romantic three-night break in Portugal following the Invictus Games in Germany.

The couple reportedly flew from Dusseldorf to Lisbon before travelling to Melides in September 2023.

A source close to the Sussexes confirmed their visit to Portugal.

In July this year, Harry told ITV that he would not be bringing Meghan back to the UK due to fears over her safety.

He said: “It’s still dangerous, and all it takes is one lone actor…whether it’s a knife or acid, whatever it is, and these are things that are of genuine concern for me.

“It’s one of the reasons why I won’t bring my wife back to this country.”

It now seems Harry and Meghan have decided Portugal is the best place for a home in Europe.

However, this appears to make a permanent return to the UK even more unlikely.
