Autumn is the ideal season for lawn care jobs, providing optimal conditions for garden maintenance. Lawn care expert Steve Taylor from GreenThumb has highlighted a crucial task to keep your lawn thriving during the year’s final months.

He pointed out that soil compaction, thatch and moss are common issues in the latter part of the year, but there’s an effective solution to ensure your lawn remains “thriving, greener and healthier”. Compaction and thatch can inhibit root growth and create a habitat for moss.

By “prioritising aeration and scarification”, homeowners can maximise their lawn’s health and growth potential. Aeration creates small holes in the soil, allowing essential nutrients, light and air to reach the roots.

Non-compacted soil promotes root growth and supports a “healthier lawn overall”. To minimise thatch, which provides an ideal environment for moss, it’s “essential to have your lawn scarified”.

Scarification reduces surface thatch, helping to control moss and giving roots access to what they need to flourish. This task should take around 15 minutes, reports the Express.

There are a few tools to make lawn scarifying easy. For smaller lawn areas, a manual scarifier works perfectly. The Darlac Lawn Scarifier is currently available on Amazon for £41.50, reduced from £44.99.

Customers are praising the functionality, ease of use, and build quality of this outdoor living product. They say it’s a good product that works well, is easy to set up, and is very sturdy.

However, some aren’t too pleased with the fit and handle quality. Another manual scarifier option is the Kent and Stowe Stainless Steel Scarifying Rake, available for £36.99 at Marshalls Garden, which has received five-star ratings from customers.

For those gardeners looking to scarify larger areas, a mechanical version is recommended. The VonHaus Lawn Scarifier, currently priced at £109.99 down from £114.99 on Amazon, is a great choice.

Not only is it an Amazon Choice product, but customers love its effectiveness, ease of assembly, and how well it scarifies lawns. They mention it’s easy to pull out moss and thatch, and is good value for money.

Customers also appreciate its lightweight design. However, some customers have reported that the collection box is far too small for this kind of work.

Alternatively, the Einhell Electric Scarifier can be picked up from Toolstation for £89.98 down from £129.98. Customers in the reviews for this product claimed it worked perfectly, was easy to use and were impressed by it, but there was one flaw some picked up on – the handles aren’t moveable.
