FA CEO Mark Bullingham has revealed that they interviewed ‘approximately 10 people’ before selecting Thomas Tuchel as the next permanent England manager.

England have been on the hunt for a permanent manager after Gareth Southgate stepped down after the Euro 2024 final in July.

The FA ended up giving Lee Carsley the job in an interim role while they delved into the interview process for a permanent selection.

There was a suggestion that Carsley was being considered as the favourite after the September international break, but the former Republic of Ireland footballer appeared to rule himself out of the job last week.

Reports then emerged that Tuchel was being considered with it soon being revealed he had been given the job.

Bullingham revealed in Tuchel’s unveiling on Wednesday afternoon that they had spoken to several managers before choosing the former Bayern Munich boss.

“We interviewed approximately 10 people, we interviewed some English candidates within that,” he said.

“You wouldn’t expect me to divulge any more than that.”

He added: “We ran a really clear process… clearly some were more up for the role than others.

“But we were absolutely delighted to end up with Thomas and we believe he gives us the best chance to win the World Cup so we believe we’ve got the best candidate for the job.”

It also emerged that Tuchel had signed his contract to become England manager on October 8, before matches against Greece and Finland last week.

Tuchel’s announcement was delayed because the FA didn’t want to ‘disrupt’ the international camp.

But the German won’t be starting his new role until the New Year with Lee Carsley taking charge of next month’s matches against Greece and the Republic of Ireland.
