You would likely be forgiven if you left the Nissan Murano out of conversations about modern midsize crossovers. Its current iteration has been around for 10 model years starting in 2015, and in that time, all of its key competitors have released all-new models and in some cases, two new generations have been released. However, for the 2025 model year, Nissan has finally entered the chat with an all-new fourth generation of the Murano.

No longer the oldest offering, the Murano has been brought back to life with modern technology and design, a new engine and an upscale, premium approach. Slotting between the Rogue and much larger Pathfinder, the Murano arrives on the heels of the all-new Kicks, showing that change is actively happening.

What powers the 2025 Nissan Murano?

What’s not powering the 2025 Nissan Murano is the old 3.5L V6 with the lackadaisical CVT. Instead, Nissan tapped into the Infiniti parts bucket and lifted a 2.0L Variable Compression (VC) turbocharged four-cylinder engine that kicks out 241 horsepower (19 less than the previous generation) and 260 lb-ft of torque, 20 more than before. For reference, the Infiniti QX50, QX55 and QX60 also use a 2.0L VC turbo engine but tuned for different output. A familiar-to-Nissan via the Pathfinder and Frontier nine-speed automatic transmission is dropped in and all-wheel drive is standard.

In an ever-evolving automotive market, it’s peculiar that there are no electrified powertrains available with this all-new model.

2025 Nissan Murano fuel consumption

As of publishing, Natural Resources Canada figures haven’t been released, but the 2024 Murano saw a combined highway and city driving average of 10.4 L/100 km. With the VC turbo engine, consumption should see a slight reduction. With it’s curb weight in the mid 4,000-pound mark, high nine’s is a realistic guess for fuel consumption for the 2025 model year.

We do know that it’ll use a 70.8L fuel tank, down slightly from the 72L fuel tank in the outgoing third-gen model.

How much can the 2025 Nissan Murano tow?

For 2025, the Nissan Murano’s tow rating remains constant at 1,500 pounds.

Exterior changes on the 2025 Nissan Murano

Dimensionally, only the width sees a significant change, growing by 2.6 inches, giving it a stronger presence in someone’s rearview mirror.

Bye-bye to boomerang headlights, taillights and floating roofline. Hello to stronger, sleeker design lines. Up front, the V motion grille, formerly made of chrome, has been exchanged for a light-based design, which pairs well with Nissan’s “Crystal Cube” LED headlights. The side mirrors are now mounted on the body instead of A-pillar for better visibility. The rear features a trendy light bar connecting the minimalistic taillights with only the centred Nissan logo offering separation. Said logo also cleverly houses the trunk release button, while the rear wiper is now tucked beneath the spoiler for a streamlined look. The licence plate holder is now beneath the tailgate, which completes the new exterior look.

The excessive curves of the former Murano have been swapped out for a smoother, stronger design that still bears a sort of roundish figure, as opposed to the boxy Rogue and Pathfinder. Side by side, the 2024 and 2025 Murano look entirely different.

Standard safety features in the 2025 Nissan Murano

Nissan goes heavy here with its robust Nissan Safety Shield 360, which includes automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, high beam assist, lane departure warning, blind spot warning, rear cross-traffic alert and rear automatic braking. Other standard safety features include forward collision warning, lane keep assist and blind spot intervention.

Interior updates in the 2025 Nissan Murano

Two 12.3 inch screens house both the infotainment system and configurable instrument cluster. Think of the all-electric Nissan Ariya, complete with large volume knob. Also inspired by the Ariya are the Murano’s capacitive touch HVAC controls. The chunky old gear lever is replaced with four buttons just behind the wireless charging pad and because of that, there’s a lower pass through storage section, similar to the Rogue.

The open concept cabin sports a clean, uncluttered design with plenty of soft touch materials in a premium package. Not as minimal as the barren Volvo offerings but rather, a balance of simple and effective.

In addition to the front seats, the rear seats also get Nissan’s “Zero Gravity” treatment and those seats fold flat.

Optional 64-colour ambient lights, an Intelligent 360-degree surround view camera, panoramic sunroof, semi aniline leather appointed seats and heated outboard rear seats are some of the available goodies depending on which trim is selected, as are ventilated and massaging front seats.

How much cargo space does the 2025 Nissan Murano have?

The 2025 Nissan Murano has 931 litres of cargo space with the rear seats upright and 1,798 litres with those seats folded. The 2024 model year has 881 litres, 50 litres less than the 2025 model, but interestingly, the outgoing model has 1,841 litres which is 43 litres more than the new generation.

What standard features come with the 2025 Nissan Murano?

Standard features in the 2025 Nissan Murano include heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, wireless smartphone charging, four USB-C ports,20-inch wheels, eight-way power driver’s seat, six-way power passenger seat, and remote engine start.

What notable technology comes with the 2025 Nissan Murano?

ProPilot Assist is a great standard feature in the base Murano. It blends Nissan’s intelligent cruise control with steering assist for highway driving on the base SV trim. ProPilot 1.1 comes with the SL and Platinum trims, which uses navigation information to adjust speeds leading up to curves taken from the Murano’s planned route. An available 3D surround view camera, complete with eight “virtual” viewpoints and an Invisible Hood View (good for carwash tracks and avoiding curbs) are new for the Murano this year.

SL and Platinum trims include Google Maps, Google Assistant and the Play Store. Those same two trims feature a 10-speaker Bose audio system, whereas the previous generation’s higher trims were tuned with an 11-speaker Bose system.

How much will the 2025 Nissan Murano cost in Canada?

Nissan says pricing will be announced closer to the release date, which is slated for early 2025. The MSRP for 2024 models went from $42,848 (SV trim) to $49,298 (Platinum trim), so realistically, it’d be consistent with the current market to see a slightly increased MSRP for 2025 models.

Final thoughts

If there’s a possible scuff, in addition to the current gasoline-only powertrain, to this all-new fourth generation Murano, perhaps it’s that while it arrived fashionably late, it might be too late for some. Consumer behaviour is an ever-moving target and reminding them that the Murano not only exists, but has been handsomely redesigned might take a heavy push on the accelerator. With this recent lane change to an upscale offering, Nissan’s hoping to overtake the competition in style.
